Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility

The Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility

The BFF...Your Best Friend in Fermentation!

The Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility (BFF) is a cutting-edge facility located in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia. It offers state-of-the-art equipment and extensive expertise in biotechnological applications to both academic and industry clients. The BFF’s goal is to lead the way in research, development, and manufacturing, as well as to cultivate the next generation of scientists.

Established in 1967, the BFF has grown and maintained an array of state-of-the-art equipment. BFF resource experts speed the pace of your research, development, and manufacturing.

The BFF now has the unique capability of culturing Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) organisms at 20L volumes. This equipment is housed in the UGA Animal Health and Research Center.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

“We have relied upon BFF for decades to assist our research efforts ranging from optimizing fermentation conditions on a liter-scale to growing a variety of unusual anaerobic microbes up to 600 L. The staff have exceptional experience in microbial fermentations and provide a unique service at exceptional value. We are very fortunate to have had such a facility available to us and it has had a major positive impact on my research program. I recommend BFF for growth of both conventional and non-standard microbes without any reservation.”

Michael Adams, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor, University of Georgia

"The UGA Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility (BFF) was able to quickly accommodate our request for a project that was important for staying on our internal timeline. Not only was BFF able to schedule our request quickly, but the staff also worked with us to ensure that all raw materials and equipment were received and ready to use before the project started. Thanks to the expertise of BFF’s staff and collaboration with our project team, the project was executed on time and successfully completed despite the technically challenging nature of the work."

Jeff de Kozlowski, Director of Process Engineering, Vesteron

"We have worked with BFF for many years and partnered with their team on countless successful projects. Our company has relied on their expertise in the past and we look forward to continuing our working relationship. We can confidently recommend their facility and team to anyone who may need their services."

Bill Lunsford, Operational Supervisor, rPeptide

“We needed to grow some "difficult" anaerobic bacteria at large scale (500L) for our research projects. We contacted the UGA Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility (BFF) because we were having problems with our previous supplier (European). BFF staff promptly answered us and, after a brief meeting, they rapidly started growing the bug and delivered the cells on time. I have absolutely no doubt to recommend this service! They are highly experienced in microbial growth and provide a service at a very good service/price ratio. I am so grateful for their collaboration!”

Luisa B. Maia, Ph.D., Assistant Researcher, NOVA School of Science and Technology, Lisbon, Portugal
